How to tell the difference between a simple drain clog and a true sewer backup in your Los Angeles home.
Standing water in a tub or a slow drain is annoying. Sewage coming up out of the shower is a different problem entirely. Knowing the difference helps you make the right call to a Los Angeles plumber — fast.
Drain backup. A single fixture is slow or clogged. The cause is local: hair, grease, soap scum, or a partial blockage in the branch line. A plunger or a basic snake usually solves it.
Sewer backup. Multiple fixtures back up at the same time, you hear gurgling in toilets when you run a sink, or wastewater rises through the lowest drain in the house (often a tub or floor drain). The blockage is in the main sewer lateral — the pipe that carries waste from your home to the city main.
Common LA causes of sewer backups:
- Tree root intrusion into clay or cast-iron laterals
- Bellied or collapsed sections in older lines
- Grease and wipes built up over years
- Offsets at joints from seismic and soil movement
Why this is an emergency. Sewage exposure is a health hazard. Standing wastewater damages flooring, cabinets, and subfloor within hours, and many insurers limit coverage for delayed claims.
What we do. Camera inspection of the lateral, hydro jetting to clear the blockage, and a written quote for repair if we find roots, cracks, or a collapse. Trenchless options (pipe lining or pipe bursting) keep most LA driveways and landscaping intact.
